The story of The Vatican Museums & Sistine Chapel
Michelangelo did not want this job.
He was thirty-three, he considered himself a sculptor, and he had been pulled off a marble commission to paint a ceiling he never asked for. He complained in letters. He complained in verse. He wrote that his beard pointed at heaven, that paint dripped onto his face, and that he was no painter at all.
He worked on it for four years, standing, head tilted back.
What you are walking toward is not one museum but a chain of them — five centuries of popes collecting, commissioning and occasionally looting, strung along seven kilometres of corridors. Egyptian mummies. Etruscan bronze. Raphael's rooms. A gallery of forty maps painted when mapping was still half guesswork.
Almost everyone is walking the same direction, toward the same room.
When you reach it, look up before you look around. The ceiling is the famous part, but the wall behind the altar is the stranger one. Michelangelo came back twenty-five years later, older and darker, and painted the Last Judgement — including his own face, hanging as an empty skin in a saint's hand.
He never stopped calling himself a sculptor.
