The story of Prague Castle & St Vitus Cathedral
Call it a castle and you will look for a single building. There is no single building.
What stands on this ridge is a walled town: three courtyards, a cathedral, a basilica, a monastery, gardens, a lane of tiny houses, and the office of a head of state who still works here.
St Vitus took nearly six hundred years. The foundation stone went down in 1344 and the western towers were finished in 1929, which is why one half of the facade looks medieval and the other half looks like it was carved last century. It was.
In 1618 two Catholic governors were thrown out of a window in the palace on your right. They landed in a dung heap and survived, which Catholics called a miracle and Protestants called luck. Either way the argument that followed lasted thirty years and emptied much of central Europe.
Golden Lane is the row of doll-sized houses along the northern wall. Castle guards lived there, then goldsmiths, then the poor. Kafka wrote in number 22 for a winter.
The guard changes every hour at the gates, with the full ceremony and band at noon.
A town that has been the seat of Bohemian kings, Habsburg emperors, Nazi occupiers and Czech presidents, and still opens its gates every morning.
