Notre-Dame de Paris: key facts

The story of Notre-Dame de Paris

Look up.

What you're seeing took nearly two hundred years to build. They started in 1163, and generations of stonemasons lived and died before it was finished. Fathers passed the work to their sons.

For centuries this was the heart of Paris — not just a church, but the point from which all distances in France are measured. There's a small bronze marker in the square: kilometre zero. Every road sign in the country counts from right here.

It has survived a great deal. Revolutionaries smashed its statues, mistaking biblical kings for French ones. It fell into such ruin that by the 1800s there was talk of demolishing it. Then a novelist named Victor Hugo wrote a book about a bell-ringer who lived in its towers, and all of Paris fell in love with the cathedral again. The book saved the building.

And then, in April 2019, the world watched the roof burn.

The spire fell. The oak beams — some cut from trees planted eight hundred years ago — were lost. People stood on these bridges and wept.

But the stone held. The towers held. The great rose windows survived.

And Notre-Dame reopened in December 2024, restored by thousands of craftspeople using medieval techniques: hand-hewn oak, quarried stone, lead and glass. Cleaned of centuries of soot, the interior is brighter now than any living person has ever seen it.

Nine hundred years, and it's still standing. Still the centre of everything.
