Basilica Cistern: key facts

The Palace Beneath Your Feet

You're standing above one of the best-kept secrets of the ancient world. Right beneath Sultanahmet's streets lies a vast underground palace — built not for kings, but for water. In 532 AD, Emperor Justinian I ordered the construction of this cistern to supply Constantinople's Great Palace. 336 marble columns, each 9 metres tall, hold up the ceiling in silent rows.

For centuries after the Ottoman conquest, locals had no idea it was here — they just lowered buckets through holes in their basement floors to fetch water. Some even fished in it. A Dutch traveller rediscovered it in 1545.

Today, two million people visit every year. Descend the stairs and see for yourself.
