The story of Buda Castle & the Royal Palace
Count the times this hill has been flattened and you lose track somewhere around the fourth.
A royal palace stood here in the thirteenth century. The Mongols came. It was rebuilt. The Ottomans took it in 1541 and held it for a hundred and forty-five years; the siege that ended that left the hill in pieces. The Habsburgs built a baroque palace. That burned in 1849. They built a bigger one. In the winter of 1944 the German army dug in here and the Soviet army spent fifty days taking it, street by street, room by room. When the smoke cleared the palace was a shell.
What you are looking at is the rebuilt version, finished in the 1980s, deliberately plainer than what stood before.
Under your feet the story is older. Clearing the rubble after the war exposed medieval walls and vaulted rooms that had been buried inside later building work for four hundred years. Those rooms are part of the museum now.
The courtyards and terraces are open ground; you can walk them end to end. The Matthias Fountain in the western court is where people arrange to meet.
A palace that has been destroyed more often than most cities, and is still the first thing you see from the river.
