Anne Frank House & the Jordaan: key facts

The story of Anne Frank House & the Jordaan

The building in front of you was a working factory. Pectin for jam, spices for sausage. The business was Otto Frank's, and it kept trading the whole time his family was hiding in the back of it.

That is the detail people miss. The annexe was not somewhere remote. It was upstairs from an office where staff came in every morning, and lorries pulled up at the door.

Eight people lived above that for just over two years, in rooms they could not move around in during working hours. No running water in daylight. No going near a window.

Four employees kept them alive. Miep Gies, Bep Voskuijl, Johannes Kleiman and Victor Kugler bought food on forged ration cards, brought library books, and said nothing for 761 days.

Someone informed. The Nazis came in August 1944, and despite decades of investigation nobody knows who made the call.

Miep Gies found Anne's papers on the floor after the arrest and put them in a drawer unread, meaning to give them back. Only Otto came home.

The rooms were left unfurnished at his insistence. He did not want them made comfortable.

Outside, the Jordaan is now one of the most desirable districts in the city. In 1942 it was a poor workers' quarter, which is exactly why a hiding place could exist here at all.
