Fisherman's Bastion & Matthias Church: key facts

The story of Fisherman's Bastion & Matthias Church

The white turrets on the edge of the hill look medieval. They were finished in 1902.

The Bastion was built as a viewing terrace — a frame for the panorama and for the church behind it. Its seven towers stand for the seven Magyar chieftains who arrived in the Carpathian basin in 895. The name comes from the fishermen's guild that, by tradition, defended this stretch of wall; whether they ever did is not documented.

The church behind it is the real thing. It has been standing in some form since the thirteenth century, and its official name is the Church of the Assumption — but everyone calls it Matthias, after the king who was married here twice and who added the south tower.

Under Ottoman rule it was a mosque. The frescoes were whitewashed, the furniture removed, the interior opened out. What you see inside now is a nineteenth-century reconstruction that borrowed heavily from that period: the walls are covered in painted pattern rather than pictures, more carpet than cathedral.

The roof is Zsolnay tile, glazed in a diamond pattern, and it is the reason the church photographs the way it does.

Two buildings, one real and one invented, holding up the same view.
