The story of Dam Square & the Royal Palace
This was never meant to be a palace. It was a town hall, and the largest secular building in seventeenth-century Europe.
Amsterdam built it at the height of its wealth to say something specific: that a city of merchants, with no king, could out-build any court on the continent.
The ground under you is peat and water. To carry the weight, the builders drove 13,659 wooden piles into the mud. Every Dutch schoolchild learns the number.
Go inside and look at the floor of the great hall. It is inlaid with maps — the eastern and western hemispheres and the night sky — so that anyone standing there was standing on the known world. That was the argument the building was making.
Then in 1808 Napoleon's brother Louis arrived as King of Holland, decided the town hall would do nicely, and moved in. Amsterdam lost its town hall and gained a palace it had never asked for.
The Dutch royal family still uses it for state occasions, which is why it closes without much warning.
Outside, the square has been the city's stage for everything — proclamations, liberations, protests, and now pigeons and a war memorial.
A merchant city that built a monument to itself, and then had a king move in.
