The story of St Peter’s Basilica & Square
To pay for this building, the Church sold forgiveness.
The old basilica had stood over the apostle Peter’s grave for eleven hundred years and was falling down. Replacing it took a hundred and twenty years, twenty popes, and a run of architects — Bramante, Raphael, Michelangelo, Bernini — each rewriting the last one’s plan.
It also took money the papacy did not have.
So indulgences went on sale across Europe: pay, and time in purgatory is reduced. In Germany a monk named Martin Luther wrote out ninety-five objections. The Reformation began, in part, as an argument about how this roof was funded.
Walk into the square first. Bernini wrapped it in two curved colonnades he described as the arms of the Church reaching out to embrace the world. Find the round stone set into the pavement either side of the obelisk and stand on it — from there the four rows of columns line up into one.
Inside, nothing is the size it appears. The letters ringing the base of the dome are nearly a metre and a half tall. The cherubs holding the holy water are the size of adults.
The building is designed to make you feel small. It works.
