The City Within a City
In 1453, Sultan Mehmed II conquered Constantinople and rode straight to Hagia Sophia. Six years later, he began building his palace on the hill above — the highest point of the city, where the Bosphorus meets the Golden Horn and the Sea of Marmara.
For the next 400 years, Topkapi Palace was the heart of the Ottoman Empire — home to more than 30 sultans, thousands of servants, 300 concubines in the Harem, and treasures that still take your breath away. The 86-carat Spoonmaker's Diamond. The Topkapi Dagger with emeralds the size of eggs. The sword and cloak of the Prophet Muhammad.
In 1856, the last sultan moved out to a European-style palace on the Bosphorus. In 1924, Atatürk turned Topkapi into a museum. Today, over 3 million people visit every year. Allow at least 3 hours — there is more here than most people expect.
